Dolphins Beef Up Lines In Day Two Of NFL Draft
Fins Draft Nine Players In All
NEW YORK, NY (CBS4) ―
The Miami Dolphins went into day two of the NFL Draft looking for help at both the offense and defensive lines, and depth in the backfield.
With the first pick of the third round, number 64 overall, the fins took Hampton defensive end Kendall Langford. In his four years in college, Langford recorded 236 tackles (56 for losses) including 24.5 sacks. Analysts say he doesn't have the ability to get to the quarterback from the defensive end position on a consistent basis. But, could be an excellent down lineman in a 3-4 defensive scheme.
The Dolphins continued to build depth along the offensive line with the selection of Utah State guard Shawn Murphy in the fourth round. Experts say the 6'3 320 lbs lineman needs to develop a mean streak when he plays at the pro level.
In the sixth round, the Dolphins took Toledo running back Jalen Parmele. At 5'11 and 224 lbs, Parmele had a breakout senior season carrying the ball 276 times for 1,511 yards and 14 touchdowns. Analysts say he's effective when he runs between tacklers but will have a hard time turning the corner at the NFL level.
With their second selection of the sixth round, the Dolphins took Connecticut offensive guard Donald Thomas. His stock has risen over the last year, but scouts don't consider him fundamentally sound and lacks the size. Another reason for concern with Thomas is his arrest back in 2006.
And, with their third pick of round six, the Dolphins selected Montana running back Lex Hilliard. At 5'11 231 lbs, analysts project him at fullback at the next level. He doesn't have great speed and lacks elusiveness. His blocking skills will need to improve as well.
The Dolphins wrapped up their draft with the selection of Arizona defensive tackle Lionel Dotson in the seventh round. The 6'3 296 lineman registered 121 tackles, including 10.5 sacks, in his four years with the Wildcats. Scouts say Dotson lacks the size to play inside, but they like the way he uses his hands.
With today's selections, the fins drafted nine players overall with Jake Long, Pillip Merling, and Chad Henne getting picked Saturday.
