Patrick Cobbs Lost For Season With Torn ACL
By: Kimberly Thompson
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Miami Dolphins running back Patrick Cobbs had to watch the Dolphins comeback victory over the New York Jets from the bench. Cobbs, a key part of the Wildcat offense and the kickoff return team, tore his ACL during the fourth quarter of Monday night's game.
Cobbs will be out for the remainder of the football season due to the injury. But perhaps just as importantly, his injury eliminates an element of the Dolphins wildcat package.
The wildcat offense formation is distinguished by a direct snap to the running back and an unbalanced offensive line. Cobbs had the ability to line up as a third running back in the formation along with Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams. Cobbs was a mainstay in the formation. Last season, he had a 53-yard touchdown catch and a 44-yard run from the formation.
The wildcat was used in the final drive against the New York Jets to help propel the Dolphins to victory. Rookie quarterback Pat White replaced Cobbs in the Wildcat during the final drive. In the final six seconds of the game running back Ronnie Brown scored out of the Wildcat giving the Dolphins a 31-27 victory over the Jets.
So far this season, Cobbs led the Dolphins with 16 kickoff returns for a 22.6 yard average. His injury now means second-year running back Lex Hilliard will likely be elevated from the practice squad onto the more field time for second year player Lex Hilliard.
