Sunday Football Update
New England 36, Tampa Bay 7
Tom Brady threw three touchdowns and the Patriots (5-2) beat the winless Buccaneers (0-7) in London. Brady completed 23 of 32 passes for 308 yards with two interceptions. His favorite target: Former Dolphins receiver Wes Welker, who caught 10 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. New England got some scoring help on defense, when safety and former Miami player Brandon Meriweather returned an interception 39 yards for the opening score. Tampa Bay is working with two young quarterbacks, and second-year pro Josh Johnson threw for 156 yards, one touchdown and 3 interceptions. The game was played before a sellout crowd of 84,254 at Wembley, England's national stadium, the third straight year the NFL went to London for a regular season game.
Houston 24, San Francisco 21
The Texans (4-3) held onto a big lead after a strong rally by the 49ers (3-3). Houston had a 21-0 lead going into the third quarter, but almost wilted after San Francisco substituted starting quarterback Shuan Hill for backup Alex Smith. Michael Crabtree started after a 17-month contract extension holdout, but his NFL debut was overshadowed by the quarterback issues. Smith tossed two consecutive TDs to Vernon Davis to make it 21-14 with 12:43 left in the fourth, but the Texans answered back with a Kris Brown field goal that proved to be a game-winner. Smith connected with Davis on another passing score with 3:43 remaining, but Houston's Eugene Wilson intercepted the top-draft pick in 2005.
Pittsburgh 27, Minnesota 21
Brett Favre and the Vikings (6-1) suffered their first loss of the season to Pittsburgh, which used defensive touchdowns in the fourth quarter to get ahead. LaMarr Woodley returned a Minnesota fumble 77 yards and Keyaron Fox scored on an 82 yard interception return after picking off Favre with one minute left in the game. Favre finished with 334 yards on 34 of 51 passing, while Ben Roethlisberger had 175 yards with a touchdown in what was anticipated to be a quarterback duel. The Pittsburgh (5-2) defense had other plans.
Indianapolis 42, St. Louis 6
Peyton Manning tossed three touchdowns as the Colts (6-0) routed the Rams (0-7). Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark and Austin Collie scored, with cornerback Jacob Lacey adding a touchdown on defense. Joseph Addai and Chad Simpson scored on rushing touchdowns for the Colts, who won their 15th straight regular season game. Despite Steven Jackson's 134 yards rushing, the Rams had trouble moving the ball and only had 14 first downs 6 from rushing.
Dallas 37, Atlanta 21
Tony Romo and backup Miles Austin connected for two touchdowns as the Cowboys (4-2) beat the Falcons (4-2). Austin, an undrafted player in his fourth season, had six catches for 171 yards against the Falcons, who turned the ball over three times. Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan had 198 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw two interceptions. Romo finished with 311 yards on 21 of 29 passing for the Cowboys, who needed overtime to beat Kansas City last week.
Arizona 24, New York 17
Kurt Warner threw for 231 yards and a touchdown as the Cardinals (4-2) beat the Giants (5-2) on Sunday night. New York dismantled in the fourth quarter. Down 24-17 with over five minutes on the clock, the Giants turned the ball over on both of their final drives. Ahmad Bradshaw turned the ball over after a fumble and Eli Manning followed up on the ensuing series by throwing his third interception of the night. Manning finished with 243 yards passing on 19 of 37 passing for New York, which lost its second straight.
Cincinnati 45, Chicago 10
Cedric Benson rushed for a career-high 189 yards as he helped the Bengals (5-2) beat up his old team. Benson played for the Bears (3-3) for two uneventful seasons, and wanted to rack up the yards for the Bengals, who are off to their best start since 2005. Carson Palmer threw for 233 yards and five touchdowns against the Bears, who didn't score until 30 minutes into the game. Devin Hester scored the lone touchdown for Chicago in the fourth when Jay Cutler found him from five yards out.
Buffalo 20, Carolina 9
Jake Delhomme was picked off three times and the Panthers (2-4) made too many mistakes against the Bills (3-4) in the loss. The Panthers outgained Buffalo 425-167 in total yards, and Delhomme finished with 325 yards on 27 of 44 passing. The Bills' defense proved to be the difference, with Jairus Byrd bringing down two interceptions. Safety George Wilson also had a pick and the Panthers' Kenny Moore fumbled the ball with less than six and-a-half minutes left in the game.
New York 38, Oakland 0
Mark Sanchez had two touchdowns as the Jets beat the Raiders to snap their three-game losing streak. A week after Sanchez was criticized for his dejected demeanor in a loss to Buffalo, the rookie was blasted again this time for eating a hot dog at the end of the blowout. Sanchez threw for 143 yards and a score, with running back Shonn Greene tallying up two touchdowns and 144 yards in the Jets' rushing attack.
