In "Havana Bourgeois" Danny Pino stars as Alberto Varela, a talented commercial artist trying to earn a living during Cuba's transition from capitalism to communism. At first, he supports the revolution thinking the country needs a change. Then, he realizes his homeland is becoming a Marxist state.
Pino told
CBS4's Lisa Petrillo acting in this play, for him, is a tribute to those before him.
"I feel like it's a play for my generation", Pino says, "and the generations younger than mine so we can pay tribute to what our parents, grandparents and great-grandparents suffered and sacrificed for. For me, it's that I could be on stage pretending to do that. For other people, it's so they can live in liberty."
The South Florida native stars in the weekly CBS drama "Cold Case" and hasn't performed in live theater for eight years. He said making his hometown theater debut at the local theater he came to as a kid has special meaning.
"For me, it is sort of a homecoming" says Pino. "It couldn't be a better welcoming from the audience; the cast is fantastic. I can't say enough about The Actors Playhouse."
Growing up in a tight-knit Cuban family himself, Danny said it's been fun to have mom and dad in the audience every night. Even better, even though the play has serious overtones, it has many moments of great humor, unlike his TV role dealing with homicide.
"My dad always asks, 'Why are you always so serious on the show?'" Pino laughed. "I say, 'Dad, it doesn't lend itself to being happy; its homicide!' But we have a very good time and I'm happy to be back."
"Havana Bourgeois" is on stage at The Actors Playhouse through June 7th. "Cold Case" will be back for its 7th season on CBS this fall.
