Disney Sets Sail With New Documentary

"The Morning Light" Project Ties Together Much Of Roy Disney's Life

COCONUT GROVE (CBS4) ― It's going to be a great weekend to be out on the water and at the movies. Walt Disney Pictures is releasing its new documentary about a sailing race called "Morning Light."

The documentary follows 15 sailors as they train and race in an open sailing competition from California to Hawaii.

It's the brain child of Roy Disney, nephew of the late Walt Disney, and his wife Leslie DeMeuse.

"The idea was very simply, what if you take a bunch of adults at a turning point of youth and adulthood and put them on a boat together and ask them to form a team and go out and competitively race across the ocean," Disney told CBS4 Entertainment Reporter Lisa Petrillo.

"The problem is young people rarely get a chance to get on a boat, and this was our opportunity to give them a chance, and crossing the ocean empowers them," DeMeuse said.

Recently, the two took a ride on the water off of Coconut Grove with the kids from the Shake-A-Leg program, which helps those with physical challenges get a chance to sail.

"Every one of them, their eyes got bigger the adrenaline is there and they see this and it's something they understand," Disney said.

Harry Horgan, President of Shake-A-Leg told Petrillo that having Roy Disney sail with his kids, was a sweet ride for all.

"It's always been a dream to have Roy Disney because we've known about his passion for sailing, and then to learn about the movie "The Morning Light", seemed to become a natural match. Who would have ever thought he would be here, on this property that we dreamed big dreams and now they are a reality," said Hogan.

In the movie, the race took about 11 days and the sailors on board the 52 foot boat ran out of food two days before the end.

For sailor Kit Will, this movie is setting him on unchartered waters.

"Movie star biz doesn't come easy, but it's a lot of fun," Will said.

"Morning Light" is rated PG and is now playing in select theatres.
