Indie Drama "Garcia Girls" S. Fla. Debut

How The Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer

Opens In Limited Release Friday May 16

Rated R

MIAMI (CBS4) ― "How The Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer" focuses on three generations of single women in a Mexican-American family as they deal with a romantic dry spell during a hot summer in a small Arizona border town.

Dona Genoveva, played by Lucy Gallardo is the Garcia family matriarch, who gets the hots for her driving teacher. Her daughter Lolita, played by Elizabeth Peña seems to be having a dry spell until she meets Victor Reyes, played by Steven Bauer and America Ferrerra has her own desires coming to fruition.

Steven Bauer and Elizabeth Peña described their characters to CBS4's Lisa Petrillo.

"She's been left by her husband. She's a single mom coming from a catholic culture. Everything her mother taught her not to do, her mom is suddenly doing which becomes confusing for her," explained Peña.

"My character is a cad. Some people would call him a creep. This is a guy who is going down the line of all the married or unmarried or lonely women in town and he tries his luck and she becomes the subject of my desire," said Bauer.

The film is filled with passion, touching moments and down right knee slapping comedy. Some scenes, especially those with Bauer and Peña in a romance mode are downright blush worthy.

"Be prepared to cover your eyes at some point. What you see may be shocking."

Both actors are glad they've worked together before.

"It's very trusting and that what makes it nice and if he would have pulled in the improvisation he did I would have him punched him but we turned into a comic thing because I totally trust him," said Peña.

The chemistry seems to work. At a recent screening, the audience was screaming with laughter because they really seemed to identify with the characters and situations in the film.

"How The Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer" is out in limited released on Friday May 16th. It's rated R.
