Spotlight On The Miami International Film Festival

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The international spotlight is shining once again on Miami as the 25th Miami International Film Festival rolls out the red carpet to film fans and those who create all that movie magic.

The MIFF began Thursday and continues until March 9th. It features 120 short and feature-length movies, including 20 world premieres, from 50 countries, including several that debuted at last year's Sundance Film Festival.

Most of the offerings are not considered 'mainstream' movies. Most won't ever play at the local megaplex, but organizers say if you can get beyond foreign languages, subtitles, and unusual themes, the festival can provide a wealth of cinema in just ten days.

The festival kicked off Thursday evening with the film "La Misma Luna" (Under the Same Moon), a Mexican drama about a young boy who crosses the border into the United States to find his mother.

The festival also has some star power as Demi Moore, Helen Hunt, Danny Glover, Chris Cooper, Fito Paez and Gloria and Emilio Estefan are scheduled to appear at various times during the festival.

Last year's festival drew a record-high attendance of 70,000.
