Mickey Mouse Turns 80

On Nov. 18, 1928, "Steamboat Willie" First Premiered

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Mickey Mouse is celebrating a milestone today, it's his 80th birthday.

On Nov. 18, 1928, Walt Disney's first sound-synchronized animated cartoon, "Steamboat Willie" starring Mickey Mouse, premiered in New York.

November 18, 1928, is widely considered the official birthday of Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney, who created the worldwide animated icon, wanted to originally name the mouse Mortimer but according to popular legend, his wife preferred the name Mickey.

Mickey Mouse has undergone some transformations through the years, but his popularity and charm continue to grow.
