An elaborate headdress spoofing President George Bush's lame duck status, featuring an actual live duck in a leg cast, took first prize at this year's Fantasy Fest Headdress Ball in Key West.
Lisa Morris of Key West won first place for her "George the Lame Duck" entry. Her towering red, white and blue headdress incorporated her family's pet duck, named Prissy, as Bush, garbed in an Uncle Sam hat and large cast and perched in a tiny purple wheelchair.
Themed "The Raucous Caucus" in salute to the upcoming presidential election, the headdress competition is considered by many to be a one of the highlights of the 10-day Fantasy Fest masking and costuming festival.
Politically themed entrants also included a male duo in massive donkey and elephant headdresses, matching American flag-themed skirts and feather boas. Other competitors wore feathered and sequined headdresses, a "let them eat cake" concoction with dangling cupcakes and "Rock the Vote" T-shirts with gauzy red, white and blue headdresses.
Fantasy Fest runs through Sunday. Events this week will include a Pet Masquerade and Parade, the lavish Pretenders in Paradise costume competition, a street fair and masquerade march, and the dazzling Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade through Key West's historic downtown.
