Adoption Advocates Concerned About New Movie

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― The movie "Orphan" opens next Friday at a theatre near you. It's a horror movie about a recently adopted girl named Esther who appears to have an evil side, and wrecks havoc on her new family. But the whole thing has adoption advocated horrified. They're afraid it will send a bad message about adoption.

"I was just really appauled!" said Steve Williams. He and his wife Suzanne have 5 children, two are adopted. "The concern is that those who might be willing to help in that way, to provide a stable home, would be turned off by this movie," worried Williams.

The Williams family sees themselves as people who celebrate adoption, and don't like the negative stereotypes that "Orphan" could create. "Reality is, kids just want to be loved! That's the reality," said Suzanne. "Kids need a loving home. They need people who are about them."

Adoption advocated, like the group "4Kids of South Florida and the on line group "Orphans Deserve Better" are hoping this movie could actually turn into a plus. They're launching an online blitz to show positive, real life stories about adoption.
"We're just trying to show the other side, here's what happens when a family adopts, when a life is changed, a life is saved and does amazing things," said 4Kids of South Florida Executive Director Tom Lukasik.

Warner Brothers issued a statement about the movie. "Orphan is a work of fiction," said Corporate Communication Director Scott Rowe. "It is not a depiction of any real-life events or situations and has never been portrayed as anything but an entirely fictional story."

While "Orphans Deserve Better" does not advocate a boycott, there is a Facebook group with more than 45 hundred members that asking people to do just that.
