The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Miccosukee Indians won't be butting heads over the construction of a bridge on a road through the Everglades anymore. A federal judge in Miami has lifted the injunction preventing the Army from building the one-mile bridge.
The Corps claims the bridge is needed to help restore natural water flow through the Everglades. The work was challenged by the Miccosukee Indians, who consider the Everglades their ancestral home.
On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Ursula Ungaro dismissed the case and lifted her previous ruling. She cited the 2009 Omnibus Act, in which Congress funded and ordered construction of the bridge. The judge says she no longer has jurisdiction.
The project is part of a multibillion-dollar plan to restore the Everglades.
