It is estimated that one in three women will experience domestic violence at some point during their lives. Of the nearly 895 thousand female residents of Broward County, this implies that nearly 298,000 women will fall victim to domestic violence during their lifetime.
During 2008, a total of 7,475 domestic violence offenses were reported in Broward County alone according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
Women In Distress of Broward County is the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. Their mission is to provide victims of domestic violence with safe shelter, crisis intervention and resources, and to educate the community.
Women In Distress partners with a number of organizations to provide additional services to clients escaping from an abusive environment. The classes and services include: parenting skills; self esteem groups; job training and placement and life skills training.
Parenting Groups are available in English and Spanish. These parenting classes are designed to give skills to new or long time parents who have experienced domestic violence.
