Bulldog Gives BBQ Bites Without Biting Your Wallet
Cheap Eats: BBQ With A Twist In N. Miami
15400 Biscayne Blvd., North Miami
NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Combine the talents of a top chef, with his passion for down-home barbeque, without the fancy price tag; you get North Miami Beach's Bulldog Barbeque.
Don't be fooled by the tough sounding name. At the helm of this haute cuisine style barbeque joint is 33-year-old Howie Kleinberg, nicknamed "Bulldog". His fellow contestants on TV's Top Chef gave him the name. This Bulldog has always loved barbeque.
"I spent my summers growing up in the Carolinas, and spending time and coming back to North Miami, my hometown, and there was no barbeque," said Kleinberg. "So I said, we're gonna do a restaurant in this neighborhood, and we're going to do barbeque."
From cornmeal crusted oysters with avocado salad, to barbeque chicken flatbread, and the tastiest chicken wings, it's barbeque with an attitude.
"We rub in our house rub and then we smoke it in the fryer, crumbled blue cheese and homemade blue cheese dressing," said Kleinberg.
Yes you'll see the old barbeque classics such as chicken and even chili, but there's a kick.
"We try to make it interesting," said the chef. "I'm a classically trained chef, so I have to add my touches and flair a little bit, but at the same time we want to do down-home barbeque that people know and can relate to."
Howie is all over his restaurant: He's cooking, serving and tasting everything that's new.
"So how do you taste everything that goes out?" asked
CBS4's Lisa Petrillo.
"Yes, that's the way to do it-- its quality control," answered Kleinberg.
Since Bulldog opened just five weeks ago, off Biscayne Blvd. and 154th Street, it's been standing room only at the 50 seat eaterywith customers satisfied with their meals and the price they paid for them.
"With the economy the way it is, I want to give people options," said Kleinberg. "I know when I eat out, I don't want to spend an arm and leg to have a good meal, so I built a restaurant that I want to come and eat at."
Bulldog Barbeque is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
