Cheap Eats Goes Mexican And Italian

E-Mail Us your suggestions for South Florida's best Cheap Eats.

MIAMI (CBS4) ― In the mood for some Mexican food but don't want to pay a lot of pesos? Just head to Ver Daddy's Taco Shop, just off Biscayne Boulevard and 75th Street in Miami.

Inside, it's a taste of Mexico at its best. Owner and chef David Bass didn't grow up with a silver spoon in his mouth, but rather a tortilla.

"I didn't think there was anything in our household that we didn't wrap around a tortilla," Bass explained to CBS4's Lisa Petrillo. "Even if it was spaghetti, to me that was normal, to me it was my soul food."

Loyal customers can take-out or dine-in in order to devour the delicious fresh Mexican dishes. All of the sauces are made fresh on the premises including David's own secret crema Mexicana sauce with a hint of cilantro.

Popular menu items include the Baja fish tacos made with fresh battered grouper, the Macho Taco with shredded chicken, or steak and potato and the Enchilada Taco Plate.

All of the dishes are completely made from scratch; from the salsas and guacamole to the tacos and tortillas and the prices are just right. Almost every entree under 10 dollars.

"Right now, during these tough economic times we consider ourselves an affordable luxury," said Bass. "We're not a typical fast food joint but we try to give our customers the quality of a sit down meal in a matter of minutes."

From vive Mexico to mangia Italiano, John The Baker in Cooper City is a local favorite. This family owned and operated landmark consistently satisfies hungry customers 7 days a week. Now the restaurant is offering all you can eat pasta nights every Thursday night for $7.95 including a soda.

"We use Italian imported pasta and San Marzano tomatoes," said owner John Scinicariello. "We're not cheapening the product."

On Tuesdays, it's all about pizza at John The Baker. One large pie is only $7.95.

Some other meal deals include a T.G.I. Fridays offer. Sixteen dishes, sandwiches or their large salads, for just $5.00.

Applebee's is also jumping on the cheap eats bandwagon by offering a 2-for-$20 deal. Share an appetizer, get two entrees, for $20.00
