Holy Moly, Students Go For Guacamole Record

HOMESTEAD (CBS4) ― Culinary students from four South Florida high schools are going for the record Sunday as they try to whip up the world's largest batch of Guacamole.

The students, volunteers and some local chefs will attempt to break the Guiness World Book of Records current champ the Schnebly Redland's Winery in Homestead.

The current record of 4011 pounds, 12 ounces was set in 2007 in Lynwood, California.

Students from culinary/agricultural programs at South Dade Senior High, John A. Ferguson Senior High, Robert Morgan Senior High and Homestead Senior High started peeling at 8 a.m. in hopes of having enough ready for the 3 p.m. weigh-in.

Chefs Giancarla Biondi from Escopazzo, Miami Beach, Darren Lee from the Intercontinental Hotel, Doral, Michael Schwartz from Michael's Genuine, Miami and Allen Susser from Chef Allen's, Aventura will each work with one school.

"We're renting a certified 10,000-pound scale," said winery owner Peter Schnebly, who dreamed up the Holy Moly Redland Guacamole Celebration with Will Dukes, a teacher at Ferguson.

Schnebly says they'll have 10,000 pounds of avocados on hand, but won't say how by how much they plan on busting the old record. Schnebly says the recipe will be an authentic Mexican version using avocados, mayonnaise, tomatoes and lime juice. The avocados were donated by Schnebly and Medora Krome Alleman, granddaughter of William Krome, who was Henry Flagler's surveyor and an early south Dade settler.

Guests will pay $2 for parking and $3 per pound for guacamole. All money raised goes to the culinary programs.
