Businesses Struggle Due To Soaring Gas Prices
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Filling up your tank once again reaches record highs on Friday. The cost of a gallon is nearing $4 and it's having a huge impact. Not just on every one of us, as we commute, but also on the people who rely on their cars to do business, and pass along that extra cost to you too.
At $3.48 a gallon, getting
around on a bike instead of car is looking better and better, but that's not an option for many.
Joe Thomas is a courier, who pays to fill up his own tank. He had to ask his boss to spot him some gas money.
"I need to get you on Monday for the $38 for gas," Thomas told his boss. "And I'm going to need another advance probably on Monday too."
With gas hitting an all time high, Thomas pays a lot more than last year just to keep driving.
"I was paying $65 a week, now I'm up to $85, $90," explained Thomas.
At Antonio's Pizza in Dania Beach, the cost of doing business is going way up, partly because of gas prices. An example, the wheat used to make the pizza has nearly doubled.
"Two months ago I was paying $15 a bag, this week one came at $28.95," said Tony Suriana of Antonio's Pizza.
The delivery charge in the pizzeria is going up 50 cents when gas hits $3.50, and diners are getting more cost conscious too.
"They're sharing more right now," explained Suriana. "They're trying to do everything so the bill is a lot less."
At Emerald Hills Flowers, they had to nearly double the delivery charge because of gas, and because of high gas prices, people just aren't spending as much in the store.
"They used to spend on the average, $50 an arraignment," said Denise Keltz, of Emerald Hills Flowers.
"Now it's almost in half, because they can't afford it."
"We also do perfumes," said Keltz. She hopes sales will be boost sales on other items, with hopes that customers will cooperate.
