Drivers Win During S. Dade Price War At The Pump

Prices Below $4 A Gallon Along Krome Ave.

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DAD (CBS4) ― A price war at the pump is being waged on a landmark stretch of roadway in Miami Dade.

As thousands of South Florida drivers pay well over $4 a gallon for regular, others head south to take advantage of the falling prices. At an Exxon on Krome Avenue, unleaded hit $3.99 a gallon on Monday. It was $3.95 at a nearby Chevron and $3.94 at a Tom Thumb.

"What attracted you to the place," CBS4's Gary Nelson just had to ask April Kanipe as she was filling up.

"The price," replied Kanipe.

"And when you saw that price what did you think," asked Nelson.

"I pulled right in and said 'alright, it's under four dollars," said Kanipe.

At almost every station along Krome Avenue in Southwest Miami Dade, gas was under $4 a gallon Monday.

Drivers like Carlos Boza not only filled his gas tank, but a few extra gas cans for good measure. Olga Pordilla said the lower price makes a big difference for her since she usual spends half her pay check on gas.

In contrast to Krome Avenue, drivers in Doral paid on average $4.19 a gallon for regular.

So why the 20 to 25-cents difference in price?

"It could be a various combination of factors," said Jorge Pinon with the University of Miami's Center for Hemispheric Studies.

Pinon said one of the reasons why gas is so much cheaper on Krome Avenue is because of 'good old fashioned' competition.

"What my competitors are at, that is what I'm going to price my station or my site at, because those are the guys that will take volume away from me," said Pinon.

Another factor in the decrease in price at the pump could be the falling price of crude oil which fell below $130 a barrel last week.

Triple-A reports the price of unleaded regular has dropped at 3-cents at pumps nationwide; down from $4.10 a gallon to $4.07 a gallon.

In Florida, unleaded regular is averaging $4.05, down a penny from last week. In Ft. Lauderdale, gas price are down about 2-cents in the last 24 hours going with regular now averaging $4.11 a gallon. Miami Dade prices are holding steady at $4.12 a gallon.
