Hemingway Look-Alikes Compete For "Papa" Title

KEY WEST (CBS4) ― The ever-popular "Papa" Hemingway look-alike contest kicked off in Key West Thursday evening with the first of two preliminary rounds at Ernest Hemingway's favorite watering hole, Sloppy Joe's Bar.

The zany contest is a facet of the island city's annual Hemingway Days festival that honors the literary achievements and Key West lifestyle of the author who lived on the island throughout the 1930s. Events continue through Sunday.

About 145 men resembling the author are competing for the coveted title of "Papa." The contest is judged by the bearded brotherhood of former winners, including 2008's "Papa" Tom Grizzard of Leesburg, Fla. A commercial real estate professional and one-time fishing guide, Grizzard beat 141 other candidates to win the title on his eighth attempt.

Festival highlights include a short story competition directed by the author's granddaughter, writer Lorian Hemingway; the three-day Drambuie Key West Marlin Tournament that recalls Ernest's passion for deep-sea fishing and an offbeat "Running of the Bulls" spoof featuring Hemingway look-alikes.

This year's event marks the 110th anniversary of Ernest's July 21 birth.

During his Key West residence, Ernest Hemingway wrote some of his most enduring works and spent his leisure hours fishing and socializing with local and literary cohorts. Each year, fans of his writing and exuberant lifestyle come together for Hemingway Days.
