Officials have begun a long-awaited Everglades restoration project intended to help restore the health of the ailing Florida Bay.
Construction began Tuesday on the so-called C-111 Spreader Canal west of Florida City in Miami-Dade County.
The South Florida Water Management District says the canal aims to help promote healthier salinity levels in Florida Bay by restoring the quantity, timing and distribution of freshwater flows into the ecosystem.
It is part of a sweeping, multibillion-dollar plan to restore the overall Everglades system, choked for years by dikes and dams to make way for farms and development.
Experts fear if Florida Bay isn't helped soon, a collapse of the entire ecosystem might occur.
