Sand Sculpture In Keys Celebrates Earth Day
"Living Green is the Key"
ISLAMORADA (CBS4) ―
A message in celebration of Mother Earth has been spelled out in the sand at the Cheeca Lodge Resort in Islamorada.
In preparation of Earth Day on April 22nd, amateur sand sculptors created a 200 foot long message "Living Green is the Key" over the weekend.
The several hundred "artists" were divided into 19 teams; each group paying $300 to create a letter in the sand.
Proceeds were donated to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center, a Keys facility that cares for sick and injured indigenous avian species.
"This year we had lots of things which came the ocean and from the Florida Keys," said Clinton Winn, the resort's conference services' manager and chair of the earth day committee. "We had a great 'H' which was our letter winner. It was two palm trees and a gentleman in the hammock. We also had some sharks, blue herons and a seahorse."
Winn said the theme this year was selected to help motivate people to take action to conserve and lessen human impact on the environment.
