The Bag Movement Helps Charities And The Earth

PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ― A local company is not only helping the environment this Earth Day, but also helping South Florida charities. CBS4 News was there for the one-time kick off to Earth Day, which allowed a bunch of unsuspecting shoppers to have a unique opportunity.

"Wow, this is really great," said one man, part of The Bag Movement event that had shoppers moving on Earth Day.

"It's good because you are celebrating the earth," Madelin Perez, who was shopping with her young daughter, told CBS4's Jorge Estevez. They were also taking part in The Bag Movement at the Wal-mart in Pembroke Pines in Broward County.

"Wal-mart is very much into recycling trying to be friendly to the earth," said Stan Hudson, co-manager at the store.

The Bag Movement is a South Florida organization that sells reusable bags. The first goal is to help the earth; the second is to use the profits to assist local charities. The charity that gets the money is decided by the color bag purchased.

"We wanted to come up with a concept that they believed in and lot of people do want to support charities and this is a way to support both things," said Ana Lorenzo, founder of The Bag Movement.

It was good news for the dozen or so people who filled their bags with groceries courtesy of the Bag Movement, who wanted to give back to their community much like the people who purchase their bags.

The bags cost $14.95 for five bags. You can get a discount when you purchase the set of five bags by entering the code "N4N" at their website. A portion of those proceeds will go to Neighbors 4 Neighbors to help feed other families.
