PEMBROKE PINES (CBS4) ― Some South Florida schools took part to help the environment on Earth Day. Students at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School on Tuesday held a tree planting ceremony.

Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, April 22nd was designated as Earth Day in an effort to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment.

It's now celebrated in 175 countries across the globe. Nelson said he chose April 22nd because most students would be in class and it would not interfere with exams or Spring Break.

Earlier on Tuesday, students at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School held a tree planting ceremony.

Preschoolers from Teddy Bear Childcare and Learning Center in Lauderdale Lakes, and teens from the city's SPARKS afterschool program planted community vegetable and flower gardens, which they will maintain as part of the city's Lauderdale Lakes: Clean and Green! campaign.

Students at Hammocks Middle School in south Miami-Dade celebrated Earth Day with a variety of activities, including a tree planting, a mural unveiling and a dance, drama and band performance.
