The city of Hialeah showed off a newly renovated fire station the city hopes will be a model for more to come. The fire station was fully remodeled to accommodate the firefighters with individual dorm rooms, bathrooms, and a state of the art computer system to better serve the community. It not only has the bells and whistles, but it's also a model of energy efficiency.
"Everything from the insulation right down to the bathrooms was done with energy efficiency in mind," said Hialeah Fire Chief Marcos de Rosa.
The remodeling job cost around $675,000 and most of the work was done by the city of Hialeah employees. Hialeah mayor Julio Robaina estimated that saved the city 20 percent.
The fire station was originally built in 1977, but thanks to the renovations, some female firefighters are looking forward to the new private dorms.
"They always have had locks on the bathrooms, but I always felt I had to hurry up. Now I can take my time," joked 21-year veteran Sandra Flynn.
Mayor Robaina said that all of the improvements come down to one thing, serving the community. "Any time you have better equipment or better facilities, it means we can better serve the children, the citizens and the elderly in Hialeah," Robaina said.
