Miami Goes Green With "Gateway to Green" Expo

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Tuesday was a first for the city of Miami when it comes to South Florida going green. The city of Miami hosted its first "Evergreen Expo."

Sixty vendors were out at the first annual 'Gateway to Green' expo at Jungle Island, sponsored by the city of Miami. "We are investing in these companies that are promoting green industries and green jobs south Florida," said Miami Mayor Manny Diaz.

"We have chairs made out of pure Rattan," said Michelle Sribyatta, who represented Pie Studios at the expo. You can go green from the ground to your living room!

One idea you can use to go green is lighting, which represents twenty percent of your electric bill. The bulbs are expensive, but experts say you will start seeing savings in a year. "They can last twenty years and can save you ninety percent in energy. Instead of 35 watts, this is three or four watts," said Zev Herman, of Superior Lighting.

You can also use recycled materials in your kitchen. "We have counter tops. Some of them are made from beer bottles and others from wine bottles," said Jennifer Ryan, of the company Coverings. The cost is about $80 a square foot.

"You are spending a little bit more, but you are doing more for the betterment of the environment," Sribyatta said.

The ultimate in going green at the expo? One company, Alterna Corp, is selling toilets that save you water. You can half flush or full flush depending on your needs.
