The start of school is less than a week away so now is the time to pick up all your school supplies. But did you know you can actually help the earth and your wallet as you fill up your backpack this year?
When you're back to school shopping, there are ways to get the usual pencils and paper and help the environment at the same time.
CBS4'S Erika von Tiehl went back to school shopping at Staples with local environmentalist Violette Sproul and her kids Christoph, age 15 and Bianca, age 9.
"It helps out the environment, my little part of what I'm trying to do to help," said Christoph.
Sproul says there are key words to look for on products such as recycled, post-consumer and the symbol "recycled."
You might think that going green means spending more green but that's not always the case.
"You know what, I thought the same until I started walking around, comparing prices and sometimes it's even cheaper to buy green," explained Sproul.
For example, Staples was selling a pair of "green" scissors for $6.29 and the regular ones cost 70-cents more. Also, notepads made from recycled paper were $6.00 less than the non-recycled ones.
Sometimes it takes a bit of looking to find that "recycled" symbol.
It took about a half hour to track down the recycled school supplies on Sproul's list. Now, Christoph and Bianca are ready to head back into the classroom with their environmentally friendly products.
