DANIA BEACH (CBS4) ―
Even with insurance, just treating the common cold with prescription drugs can add up fast.
"Even prescriptions for cold medicine," Jennie Lallande told
CBS4's Gwen Belton. "You get the flu or something, it can cost $100; I'm a student, I don't really have the budget for that."
Jennie Lallande's concerns are shared by many people with little to no health insurance to pay for medicine.
But now, a little card is making a big difference and saving people money on prescription drugs.
Tens of thousands of people in Broward County are utilizing the free program that is open to anyone. The program is sponsored by the National League of Cities and CVS Pharmacy. It's open to anyone, with or without insurance.
"I think it's a fantastic idea anyway you're going to save money is going to help," Lallande said.
In Broward County, the cities of Dania Beach, Tamarac, Hallandale beach, Wilton Manors and Miramar are already on board.
In Miami-Dade County, the cities of Coral Gables, North Miami Beach, South Miami and Miami Gardens are participating.
The prescription discount card gives people an average of 20 percent off medicine not covered by insurance. "We've seen discounts of up to 34 percent on some of the pharmaceuticals," Dania Beach Mayor Anne Castro said. She added, "It was a no brainer for us; I know more cities are joining in."
Representatives of cities participating in the program say they're receiving positive feedback from people taking advantage of the discounts and who say they welcome any break in this economy.
"We see everybody in need," says Treasa Brown, Director of Social Services and Alzheimer's Care in Lauderdale Lakes. The city is the latest to join the discount prescription card program. Cards will be made available starting Monday.
"We really serve a low income area, and we want to make sure we have all of the services available for our residents," says Brown.
It's a service that gives Jennie Lallande peace of mind, especially now that she's back in school and money is tight.
