"The Fort Lauderdale Diet"

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― As people across the country ring in the New Year, many are resolved to lose weight and get healthy. A new diet for the New Year is in a book called "The Fort Lauderdale Diet".

Dr. Charles Russo and registered dietitian Darlene Moppert are from Fort Lauderdale and have teamed up to create a simple plan with a simple message.

"We eat more than we expend in energy and that's because of our lifestyle these days," said Moppert.

"Eighty percent of the medical problems in this country are caused by our own poor eating habits," said Russo.

Dr. Russo and Moppert suggest the tried and true method of losing weight is still best - eating the right foods and exercising regularly.

"Lean meats, low fat dairy, big emphasis on fruits and vegetables. Nine to ten servings of fruits and vegetables a day with two to three servings of low fat dairy contributed more to weight loss and maintaining good blood pressure than even some medications," said Moppert.

"Nothing that we're presenting here is very new, novel or revolutionary. It's just that people don't pay attention to it," said Dr. Russo.

Russo hopes this book encourages people to pay attention and follow a healthy lifestyle. He says following this plan has helped his patients with heart disease and diabetes improve their health significantly.

"It requires dedication and a change in lifestyle a real change in lifestyle and how you eat and how you exercise," said Dr. Russo.

The book includes menus, tips on eating out and healthy recipes like a black bean dip the two authors whipped up with Tehina or crushed sesame seeds, garlic, lime juice, olive oil, cayenne pepper, cumin and black pepper.

"All of these herbs we are now finding that they're associated with medicinal properties," said Moppert.

Both authors of "The Fort Lauderdale Diet" insist it's not a fad, rather it's a lifestyle. In fact, for those who just can't seem to stick to a plan, the book includes a "90-10 rule" which explains a strategy for cheating.

"Ten percent of the time you may be having a cheat food that would amount to about 8 times a month," said Moppert.

"It's supposed to be what you do for your lifetime," added Dr. Russo.

The authors explained the diet is based on 2005 dietary guidelines for Americans and meets the American Diabetes Association and American Heart Association requirements.

The book will be available in two weeks.  If if you would like to order one send an email to: fortlauderdalediet@yahoo.com
