Lip Glosses Claim To Improve Your Mood, Body

BOSTON (CBS) ― There are some new cosmetics on the market that claim to do more than just spice up your looks.

They're designed to make you healthier, happier and even thinner. But do they really work?

The latest in lip gloss is a line of shine that promises to give you more than luscious lips -- like lift your mood, take off pounds, even curb the urge to smoke.

One gloss is scented with lemon and geranium.

"The company claims that by smelling that, it works on a certain area of your brain that controls cravings for nicotine," said Leah Wyar of Self Magazine.

But is there any science behind that shine? Dr. Alan Hirsch is with the Smell and Taste Treatment and Tesearch Foundation.

"There is no evidence that lemon and geranium oils can do anything for smoking," Hirsch said.

Lucy B's fresh juice with vanilla and flower essence promises to rid the body of toxic emotions.

And, loss gloss blast claims its ingredients including St. John's Wort and guarana will curb your food cravings. Dieter Tricia Toney says it worked for her. "I didn't feel as hungry, and when I did eat, I didn't eat as much."

Weight loss experts we spoke with say many of the ingredients haven't been proven to aid in weight loss, and those that have, won't do much good just sitting on your lips.

So while there's no harm in trying the products, keep in mind, they're more likely to enhance your lips than other parts of your life.

It's worth a try if you like the shades, but that's the most important thing, I think.

If you're interested in trying out any of these products, they're available online and in specialty stores.
