Sticking it to Wrinkles With Acupuncture

(CBS) It is an ancient therapy used to treat everything from headaches to anxiety. Now, some people are turning to acupuncture to make them look younger. It's being called a facelift without the surgery.

The results are not as dramatic as a traditional procedure, but people who have undergone the treatment say it's a good alternative to going under the knife.

According to Chinese medicine, wrinkles are caused by a weakness and imbalance of Qi, an energy that nourishes cells through pathways called meridians.

"When we stimulate certain points on different meridians, we see an increase in blood flow and energy to the face. By bringing more blood flow to those places, you can firm up and tighten muscles," says licensed acupuncturist Sheri McLellan.

Acupuncturists say to get the best results, you need about 10 treatments. The benefit is said to last 3 to 5 years, with only occasional "refreshers" needed.
