Alcohol May Be Unsafe At Any Level For Women
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Several years ago studies indicated a glass of red wine might have beneficial effects on heart health. But scientists cautioned heavy use of alcohol might raise a woman's risk of developing breast cancer. A new study reported in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute indicates even moderate use of alcohol can be dangerous.
Marsha Bradford and her friend Jane Blicksilver are known for their unique shell jewelry. Chances are you've seen celebrities wearing their necklaces.
"My original customers when I first started out were Queen Latifah and Adrienne Vittadini," said Blicksilver.
But going to jewelry shows can be exhausting.
"And at the end of the day I usually like to relax and have a glass of wine and just enjoy myself," Blicksilver admitted.
It used to be that doctors told their patients that a glass of wine would be good for their hearts.
"The only thing I had heard was that drinking a glass of wine a day would actually be beneficial," said Blicksilver.
Holly Band, a clinical dietitian, tells women at breast cancer seminars that just a year and a half ago nutritionists were recommending that women have no more than one alcoholic drink per day, no more.
"The American Institute for Cancer Research just recently posted that we no longer can actually say that anymore because some studies that they had actually just finalized indicate that one glass of alcohol a day can increase a woman's chance of breast cancer," explained Band.
Researchers estimated that alcohol could be to blame for 13% of the cancers in the women in the study. And it didn't matter if they drank wine, beer or spirits, no level of alcohol can be considered safe for women.
