Autism: Learn The Signs Early In A Child
MEDLEY (CBS4) ―
Despite the explosion in awareness of autism due to heightened media attention, and the skyrocketing number and percentage of children diagnosed with it, progress against the disorder itself hasn't been keeping pace, experts say. It affects some 500,000 American children, at an estimated annual cost of $35 billion.
Wednesday has been designated as World Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations as a way of raising awareness about the condition, it is also important to address the misconception people have of autism and the concerns of parents of children suffering the condition.
Autism is a developmental disorder that impairs social interaction and communication, and causes restricted and repetitive behavior, starting before the child is three years of age.
There are steps that parents of young children with autism can take, because treatment given early offers hope of reducing the impact of the condition.
It is important to know how young children play, learn, speak and act, and it's in these same areas, that if not developed, could be a sign of problems, including autism.
The good news is that the earlier the condition is recognized, the more parents can do to help their children reach their full potential.
