Beat Back Back-Fat With New Surgery

MIAMI (CBS4) ― When "the battle of the bulge" starts feeling like a "100 years war," some people will do anything to turn the fight to their side. "Back fat" can be notoriously difficult to beat. Now, some women are turning to a new surgery.

The dreaded back bulge is the fat and sometimes skin that droops over the bra. Do you worry about that?

"I think every woman does, a little bit," said Kelly Maddy. But she doesn't anymore. Her back bulge is gone. Plastic surgeon Brent Moelleken performed the procedure.

"Women in their 30's and 40's are often great candidates for liposuction or lipo-sculpture as we call it now. It reduces the areas where the fat bothers them for example around the bra area or around the back. Women in their 50's and 60's may need to be a little more careful because lipo-sculpture or liposuction alone may cause the skin to hang," explained Dr. Moelleken.

While liposuction is the most common way to get rid of back fat, there is a new procedure called the bra lift that is getting a lot of attention. Still, there's a downside.

"The procedure is known as the bra line back lift because it leaves the final scar beneath the bra so it's perfectly hidden," said Dr. Joseph Hunstad.

The hour long procedure removes excess skin, sometimes as much as ten inches. Then, it's all connected back together.

"In reality, it rejuvenates the entire back from the waistline all the way up to the neck. The patients tolerate a long scar for an excellent result. Every single bit of this thick skin and excess fat is gone," said Dr. Hunstad.

Patient Debbie Thrap is thrilled with the results. "I think the pleasure of seeing a more womanly shape will outweigh the small scar across my back," admitted Thrap.
