Unscrambling Studies About Eggs And Cholesterol

Study By British University Scientists Claim Two Eggs Reportedly Cut Down Level Of Cholesterol And Weight

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

A study by two British researchers makes a strong case for including eggs in the breakfast menu.

Medical experts have long thought that by eating large amounts of cholesterol-rich foods such as eggs, a person could easily increase their cholesterol levels.

But researchers from Surrey University in England have found that eating two eggs a day could help you lose weight and lower your cholesterol levels.

Their research will be in an upcoming article in the European Journal of Nutrition.

Dr. Bruce Griffin, who led the study, fed 50 overweight volunteers two eggs a day for four months.

Besides eating the eggs, the volunteers followed a reduced calorie diet.

A second group of volunteers ate the same reduced-calorie diet, but did not eat eggs. Both groups lost weight and saw a decrease in their cholesterol levels.

"There is no convincing evidence to link increased intake of dietary cholesterol or eggs with coronary heart disease," Griffin was quoted."Indeed, eggs make a nutritional contribution to a healthy, calorie-restricted diet."

Griffin thought that by eating eggs for breakfast, the volunteers felt fuller longer, which aided them in their weight loss efforts.
