Diet An Important Area For Colon Cancer
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Smoking cigarettes and your genes are obvious risk factors for developing colon cancer. But, your diet is another fact not to be neglected when you are trying to prevent colon cancer.
"Diet has a great impact on your developing cancer, any kind of cancer," nutritionist Susan Nowrouzi said.
Some studies have shown fiber, like that found in whole grain cereals, fruits and vegetables helps reduce the risk of colon cancer. The problem is most "Western (hemisphere) diets" are almost fiber-free.
"An average American gets less than 10 grams of fiber per day, which they should be getting 25 to 30 grams for optimal health," Nowrouzi added.
Diets high in red meat and processed meats are also a problem area that has shown up in recent years. Those two areas can increase the risk of developing colon cancer by as much as 50%.
And don't think you can get away with drinking anything you want either. The caffeine in coffee and tea won't increase your risk, but if you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, you will increase your risk.
Experts say eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and fish, plus weight loss can help reduce anyone's risk.
