MARGATE (CBS4) ― His son's near drowning and a battle with a hospital sparked Dr. Jeffrey Weiss to help others. The South Florida doctor opened The Healing Institute in Margate for patients who need Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which treats neurological illnesses not typically covered by insurance.

As a physician, Dr. Weiss heard of a treatment that could save his son's life: hyperbaric oxygen therapy which delivers oxygen to the brain.

Dr. Weiss saw the therapy program helping his son, Justin, but also realized that it was very expensive at $200.00 per one-hour session.

His is now going to be the first center to take patients who cannot otherwise afford the plan.

This type of  therapy needs to be done on an on-going basis, so he and his wife started Justin's Club to raise money for treatment for his son and others.

In their son's case, the Weiss family ended up filing a lawsuit against the hospital for Justin to receive Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the family won.

"I remember at the time the judge, in his wisdom, said, 'I can rule for life, or death, and I chose to rule for life,'" said Weiss.

Justin is 7 years old.  He does have some physical limitations including not being able to walk without assistance, but he does manage to go to school on a regular basis--something thought by some to be impossible considering what he has gone through.

The Healing Institute is located at 1308 A-B North State Road 7, Margate. For more information, call 954-975-3563.
