The Good Mood Diet

MIAMI (CBS4) ― Do you want to feel better?

Then pay attention to what you eat as experts say it can affect your mood.

CBS4 Health Specialist Dr. Sean Kenniff says oatmeal cookies, bagels, whole wheat bread and even a jolt of caffeine are all part of the 'good mood' diet.

"It's high in antioxidants and non-processed products that make your body feel better and actually give you more energy and make you happier. Also being hydrated with water will lift your spirit," said nutritionist Monica Hall-Gressler.

New research by Prevention magazine reveals certain snacks like healthy carbohydrates and chocolate can turn that frown upside down.

"If I was going to pick something that I thought would be a pick me up for somebody I would say dark chocolate with almonds in it. So a dark Hershey bar would be great. Not too much of it, a little part, not the whole thing," added Hall-Gressler.

The study found while pick me up foods can boost your energy and spirits, drinks like hot tea can prolong depressed moods.

Portion control and moderation are key factors when indulging in foods that make you feel good.

"When you eat right, the right amount of carbohydrates, the right amount of fruits and vegetables it can actually bring out the good hormones and the good endorphins in your body that will make you naturally feel happy and feel good about yourself," said Hall-Gressler.

Other euphoric combinations include whole grains, avocadoes, berries, granola, yogurt and water.
