Two-time Emmy nominated actress Fran Drescher shot to fame as "Ms. Fine" on the CBS hit series "The Nanny." Life was all laughs on screen, but her real life became far more serious when she received a diagnosis of uterine cancer.
"Oh, I dropped to my knees and I wept, and I thought I was going to die. I had to call my parents, which was a very difficult call to make," she said.
Drescher fought the battle and won, and is an 8-year cancer survivor.
Now she's helping others.
"I feel like I got famous, I got cancer, and I lived to talk about it, so I'm talking," she said.
After penning her N.Y. Times bestseller "Cancer Schmancer," she has now turned her healthcare philosophy into a movement.
"There's a lot of money that gets put into research for finding the cure, but at Cancer Shmancer our mission motto is 'Stage One is the cure'."
Her road to successful diagnosis and treatment wasn't easy. "It took me two years and eight doctors to get a proper diagnosis of uterine cancer. I got in the stirrups more times than Roy Rogers."
She's already enacted change on Capitol Hill. "We are very instrumental in getting the 'Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act' passed and signed into law and funded," she said.
Drescher has just been appointed by the U.S. State Department as a public diplomacy special envoy for women's health issues. This gives her yet another platform to motivate women.
"We can lock-elbows and only together if we galvanize and become one collective voice can we make a significant difference," she said.
