Home DNA Test Promises To Help With Weight Loss

MIAMI (CBS4) ― When it comes to the battle of the bulge, Americans seem to be fighting a never-ending fight. It's produced an entire industry of niche diets and has many people focused on carbs and calorie counting. But a new home DNA test claims that it can help you slim down by giving you the skinny on your genes and your diet.

"I tried every diet that there is. I really have," said Amy Katsis. "I have lost the weight, but I have always gained it back."

But Amy recently found an in-home DNA test that its makers claim can help people manage their weight. The focuses on three genetic factors that could influence weight gain.

The company's president described it like this: "How much fat from the diet an individual absorbs. How carbohydrates are metabolized how one responds to exercise differently," said company president Kenneth Kornman.

To perform the test, you take two swabs from inside your cheek and then send them to the lab. The lab will then send you a report that tells you what kind of eating and exercise program will work best with your genetic makeup.

"It's not a magic diet. It is in fact an indication. A very clear indication of how an individual's body works with certain foods and not with others," Kornman said. "The test told me that I would benefit from a reduced carbohydrate diet"

Amy's report indicated she needed to ramp up her physical activity. After learning about her needs from the DNA report, she lost 30 pounds and perhaps more importantly, she has kept the pound off.

"At first I thought 'I love my carbs. I don't know if I can do this.' But I gave it a try. And then the weight just kept falling off," Amy said.

Joan Salge Blake is a registered dietician and author of "Nutrition and You." She said the number of obese Americans has doubled since 1980, and that's not simply a question of genetics. "What has changed is our environment, our lifestyle, the way we eat," Blake said.

The DNA test costs $149 and it will take 7-10 days to get the results. Many of the recommendations in the DNA Weight Management report are similar to the government's dietary guidelines.
