Too Many Activities Can Overwhelm Your Child
Experts Say Overbooked Kids Can Stress Out
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Some kids today seem like they are always on the move competing in several sports along with taking piano and tennis lessons - all after a full day of school and on the weekends. While some youngsters may thrive on such a busy schedule, others may become overwhelmed and feel 'burned out'.
Parents like Kim Lazar say her daughter and son keep her busy with tennis ballet and baseball. It's the same for Julie Cantor-Girnun who spends most of her time shuttling her three kids to three different activities, all after a long day at school.
"They dance about ten to thirteen hours a week, depending on rehearsals," said Cantor-Gimun.
Her two daughters Molly and Carly love to dance, whether its ballet, modern or jazz. Even her eight year old son takes hip-hop classes. But that's not all. Chad Girnun is also on two baseball teams, one soccer team and hopes to start on a football team.
Their mom agrees, they may have a little to much on their plate.
"They are overscheduled, I'd like to have a little more family time and quality time," said Cantor-Gimun.
Psychologist Dr. Candace Mihm warns parents that if their children become involved in too many activities it puts stress on the family which defeats the purpose. Mihm said in her practice she is seeing more and more young kids coming in with symptoms of stress like anxiety and stomach aches.
"That is the stress taken from being the hurried child to clinical levels," said Mihm, "that burn out is the same as adults burning out."
Experts like Mihms advise parents that if their child wants to quit an activity, let them know it is okay and they can always try again when they are ready.
Other tips to avoid overloading your child's schedule include:
- Make sure there is plenty of time for homework.
- Don't forget to leave time for play and family.
- Make sure your child is interested in the activity.
- Be flexible.
- Listen to your child.
Finally, experts say moderation is key when parents are setting up their child's schedule, make sure to leave plenty of time for kids to be a kids.
