The first case of the so-called Swine Flu has been confirmed in the Florida Keys.
Monroe County Health Administrator Bob Eadie said the girl, who was between the ages of 8 and 12 years old, was taken to a hospital in Marathon last week with flu-like symptoms. Tests confirmed it was the H1N1 virus strain. Eadie said no one else in the girl's family has shown symptoms of the disease.
Last week, a Miami-Dade recorded its first fatality from the H1N1 virus.
Miami-Dade Director of Disease Control Dr. Fermin Leguen said the 9-year-old boy, who had a history of asthma, was rushed to Baptist Hospital in Kendall suffering from a respiratory illness.
According to a statement released by Baptist Hospital:
"A nine-year-old boy came to Baptist Children's Hospital ER in cardiopulmonary arrest last Tuesday, June 9. The child had a history of asthma. He was admitted to the pediatric ICU and he died the same day. Test results from the Florida Department of Health laboratory confirmed that the child had H1N1 swine flu."
Florida has had more than 415 confirmed cases of the H1N1 flu virus.
