UM Receives Nearly $5-Million To Train Army Docs

MIAMI (CBS4) ― The University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine received a shot in the arm, and in the wallet, from Uncle Sam.

Monday morning U.S. Representative Lincoln Diaz-Balart presented checks to three of the UM schools totaling nearly $5-million.

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute received $2-million for Ophthalmic Innovation Research Programs, the William Lehman Injury Research Center at the Ryder Trauma Center received $2.8-million and the Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education received $146-thousand.

The funding will be used to train doctors and medics at the Army Trauma Training Center (ATTC) at the Ryder Trauma Center. Since January 2001, the Army Trauma Training Center, in conjunction with the Ryder Trauma Center, has trained over 25 forward surgical teams and more than 650 Army personnel in active duty and reserve components - 2/3rds of all forward surgical teams in the U.S. Army.
