UM Hospital Offers Free Heart Test

To Learn More About A Free Heart Screening, Call 800-910-8083

MIAMI (CBS4) ― We all know there is 'no such thing as a free lunch', but at the University of Miami Hospital one can have your heart tested for free.

Doctors recommend that everyone over the age of 18 be checked annually for heart disease as most people don't even know they could be at risk.

As a matter of fact, anyone could be among 70-million Americans who have heart disease and don't know it. If you don't find out, there's a chance that your first symptom could be a heart attack.

Renowned cardiologist Dr. William O'Neill helped create the simple test at the University of Michigan where it was very successful. Now, O'Neill is at the University of Miami Hospital and he brought his program along.  It's the only test of its kind in the state.

CBS4 Reporter Cynthia Demos went through the test and found out that she has less than a one percent chance of having a heart attack, but was surprised to learn she is in the minority. About two-thirds of all people tested are found to be at moderate to high risk for heart disease.

"People really don't know if they have risk factors for heart disease," said Dr. O'Neill. "They don't really know or really don't want to know."

Dr. O'Neill said that's exactly why he wanted to bring the free test to the University of Miami Hospital.

To schedule an appointment for the free test, call (800) 910-8083.

Dr. O'Neill recommends for the most accurate results, it's better to make an appointment and take the test in person.
