Alonzo Mourning is returning to the Miami Heat, but not as a player. Instead, Mourning will be taking a front-office position with the team he helped win an NBA Championship. Mourning was named the Heat's vice-president of player development on Friday.
The position will see Mourning getting involved with players in an on and off-the-court role. He will also have community relations responsibilities, which will fit with Zo's multiple community programs, including Zo's Summer Groove.
The 39-year-old Mourning retired from the Heat during the past NBA season after 15 seasons. He was a multiple-time All-Star selection and one of the most dominant centers in his early career.
Mourning became an iconic figure after overcoming a battle with a deadly kidney disease and returning to the NBA as a member of the Miami Heat. Mourning, 39, retired from the Heat in January after 15 seasons. He became the first player in franchise history to have his jersey retired.
Just last week, the Miami-Dade County School Board named a new high school, near FIU Biscayne Campus after Mourning. The school will be called "Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School Biscayne Bay Campus."
Mourning devotes his time to his charitable efforts and is preparing to become a father again. He and his wife are expecting their third child.
