MIAMI (CBS4) ―
With the season opener three weeks away, the Miami Heat had yet to answer the lingering question surrounding depth at the point guard position.

The team didn't have to look far to fill the spot. Former Florida International star Carlos Arroyo signed a deal on Monday, giving the Heat an option behind second-year pro Mario Chalmers and Chris Quinn.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but CBS WFOR partner Miami Herald said that Arroyo signed a non-guaranteed, one-year deal that would be worth the veteran's minimum of about $1.1 million if he is still with the team in January.

Arroyo spent the 2009 season in Israel playing with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He last played in the NBA for the Orlando Magic during the 2007-08 season.

Arroyo was a star at FIU. He is the second all-time leading scorer in Golden Panthers' history with 1,600 career points and still has school records in assists (459). He's also the only FIU player to have 600 points in a season.
