MIAMI (CBS4) ― The Heat released point guard John Lucas on Thursday, a week before Miami plays its season opener against the New York Knicks at the American Airlines Arena.

Lucas played well off the bench early in the preseason, but his role became limited once Miami signed Carlos Arroyo to a one year, non-guaranteed contract last week.

Arroyo, a former Florida International star, has picked up the system quickly. He played 27 minutes in his debut against Memphis on Wednesday, and got rave reviews from coach Erik Spoelstra and forward Udonis Haslem after the game.

Miami has solidified the point guard position behind starter Mario Chalmers. Backup Chris Quinn should be ready for the starter after an ankle injury sidelined him for most of camp, and Arroyo brings a quick and uptempo style of play.

Lucas was told of the move before Miami played the Atlanta Hawks in Jacksonville.

His release trimmed the roster to 15 players, the league minimum during the regular season. The Heat had until 6 p.m. Monday to make the cut.

Lucas was signed as a free agent on September 28 and saw action in four preseason games. He averaged 7.0 points and 2.3 assists in 12.5 minutes per game.
