Hurricane Andrew: 16 Years Ago Today

It was August 24th, 1992. Its name was Andrew; it was the first named storm of the year. It was also the first hurricane many residents of South Florida would ever face, and as we would learn just 24 hours later, most of us were woefully unprepared.  The storm began as barely a blip on the radar and turned into a monster that would destroy much of South Florida.

Hurricane Andrew: 10 Years Later

In 2002, CBS4 produced a one-hour special which looked back at Hurricane Andrew on the 10th anniversary of the storm, and shared some amazing stories, including the Andrew memories of CBS4 Hurricane Expert Bryan Norcross.

Now, you have a chance to see that special again online. The special has presented in 6 parts; just click, and take a trip back in time.

Fly Through Andrew's Eye

When Hurricane Andrew was threatening the Florida coast, only one television station was aboard the Hurricane Hunter plane when it flew through the eye of Andrew as it approached the Bahamas. The story reporting that flight was overshadowed by the Andrew disaster, so for the first time in 15 years, here's your chance to fly through the heart of Andrew.

The story was reported by Dave Game, then a reporter and now manager of CBS internet operations in South Florida. Ironically, he traveled twice through the eye in the plane, and then, once more on the ground when Andrew passed directly over his neighborhood and heavily damaged his home.

The meteorologist interviewed in the story was Bob Burpee, who later became director of the National Hurricane Center, and who passed on earlier this year.

People have shared their memories of Hurricane Andrew in videos they've produced. Here are links to some of their work on YouTube and other video sites

Hurricane Andrew Views of the devastation caused by Hurricane Andrew south of Miami. Most of the pictures I took were immediately after the 165 mph Hurricane came through. Youtube

Hurricane Andrew-South Florida This is my Hurricane Andrew chase video. The footage was taken during Andrew's landfall on the Southeast Florida coast, at Coconut Grove, south of Miami. Though Andrew was extremely small, moving very quickly and made landfall about 15 miles to the south, my location was right at the edge of the hurricane's northern eyewall. Unfortunately the entire peak of the storm was at night, however, using a portable spotlight, I was able to capture footage throughout the entire event

Hurricane Andrew Never before seen footage of hurricane Andrew hitting the Florida coast including aerial footage of a radar airplane, national guard helicopters and soldiers going over the affected area and refugees.

Hurricane Andrew Movie An advertisement for the truly bad NBC made-for-TV movie about Hurricane Andrew.

The CBS4 Storm Team

David Bernard and the CBS4 Weather Team offer the largest and most experienced group of meteorologists in South Florida, because weather is serious business. That's why year round, and especially during hurricane season, South Florida looks to David and the Team.
