MIAMI (CBS4) ― For the first time since 2002, the number of people who will travel at least 50 miles during the coming Thanksgiving holiday is expected to drop nationwide, by 1.4 percent compared with last year, according to an annual AAA survey released Monday.

Airport officials say an estimated 700,000 passengers will travel in and out of MIA over the holiday.  An estimated 500,000 travelers are expected to fly in and out of Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport.

If you follow the rules then the lines will move move quickly.

• Arrive at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight and at least three hours before an international flight. Have your boarding pass and valid government photo ID ready to enter the security checkpoint.

• If you must carry liquids, gels and aerosols through the security checkpoint, remember the numbers "3-1-1":
1. All liquids, gels and aerosols must be placed in a 3-ounce or smaller container.
2. These containers must be placed in a 1-quart, clear, plastic, zip-top bag.
3. Only 1 bag per passenger is allowed and must be removed from your carry-on luggage and placed in a bin to be screened separately at the checkpoint.

• Pack smart. Bringing prohibited items to the airport will delay the screening process for you and other passengers. If you're not sure which items are allowed, check TSA's web site at www.tsa.gov or click here for a complete list.

•Prepare. Bring crosswords, puzzle books, magazines and other disposable reads for the longer waits so you won't be upset.

•Communication. Give flight numbers to people meeting you on the other end so that you don't have to worry about constantly updating them.

• Dress the part. Metal in your clothing may set off the walk-through metal detector. Pack coins, keys, jewelry, belt buckles and other metal items in your carry-on bag. Remember that all shoes must be removed and screened by TSA. Passengers also need to remove blazers, suit coats and bulky sweaters in addition to outer garments.

• Film. Undeveloped film should go in your carry-on bag. Hand film that is faster than 800-speed to a security officer for physical inspection to avoid being X-rayed.

• Think. Belligerent behavior, inappropriate jokes and threats will not be tolerated. Such incidents will result in delays and possibly missing your flight. Local law enforcement may be called as necessary.
