Filling Up The Cupboard For The Hungry

Visit The Daily Bread Food Bank And Fight Hunger In South Florida

MIAMI (CBS News) ―

Food bank officials in South Florida have been preparing for Thanksgiving week with donation levels lower than in the past. Such shortages might not affect Thanksgiving meals, but will likely cut into food banks' need for leaner months and emergencies.

As national jobless claims spiked to the highest level since after the 9/11 attacks, more food pantries and soup kitchens in the area have reported significant increases in the number of people seeking assistance. This affects major suppliers like the Daily Bread Food Bank, which distributes food to other charities that give them to the poor.

The executive director for Daily Bread Food Bank says no donation is too small, and volunteers are always needed for their time as well.

"Remember that for every dollar donated to Daily Bread Food Bank, 1 dollar, we can provide enough for six meals" said Judith Gatti.

In South Florida, The Miami Rescue Mission served 1,600 meals last year and expects to serve 2,500 this year; the Salvation Army in Broward last year served 400 meals, and this year is expecting 500 meals; Camillus House served 1,300 last year, anticipating 1,500 this year.
