Students Donate To Neighbor's Food 4 South Florida
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Teachers and students from across South Florida have teamed up with
Neighbors 4 Neighbors to make sure families don't go hungry this Thanksgiving holiday.
At Renaissance Elementary Charter School in Miami, every classroom joined the
Food 4 South Florida School House Drive.
"When some people don't have food, you give them to them," said kindergartener Nicholas Reiz.
Neighbors4Neighbors and
CBS4 launched the
Food 4 South Florida School House Drive earlier this year and to really make a difference before the Thanksgiving holiday reached out to schools in the community.
"The teachers are very excited about participating because we know how much help the community needs," said Renaissance Elementary Principal Ana Cordal.
"In these really tough times, we were talking, there's a lot of kids just like them who might not have the chance to have Thanksgiving, part of being Thankful is that we have to be grateful, but we also have to share with other people as well," said Elaine Castellanos, a teacher at Renaissance Elementary.
A number of food banks across South Florida have fallen on hard times as donations dropped and the number of needy families has increased.
"Some families don't have food, they need food to live," said student Kayla Lejuez.
The food collected at Renaissance Elementary will go to the Farm Share Food Bank which will distribute it to area agencies that help the needy.
More than 50 classrooms throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties registered to participate in this year's food drive.
