Practice Teamwork and Improve Fitness
Team Row's Summer Camp is funded with a $23,600 grant from The Children's Trust
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
When high school sophomore Giselle Llanes goes back to school, she can tell her friends she learned how to row this summer.
She joined Team Row a two-week program through Adult Mankind Organization, which is sponsored by The Children's Trust.
Team Row is open to beginners between the ages of 13 through 18. The ultimate goal is to teach physical fitness, emotional development, and social skills.
It's the vision of Team Row president and coach Julio Viyella.
He explained, "For some of them, they've never done a physical activity before. They've never been part of an organized sport before and all of a sudden we're throwing them in the deep end - no pun intended. It's an eye opener every single day for them."
It's also an eye opener for their parents.
A
na Someillan, who is director of Adult Mankind Organization, said parents have told her of the impact the program had on their children.
"We had one of the moms telling us this morning how her daughter over the weekend was used to texting and computers," said Someillan, "and she just told her mom, you know, 'I really love this program'."
The summer Team Row program was so successful, it's now expanding into an after-school program that will incorporate rowing as well as academics.
Viyella concluded, "When you put them in this type of sport where they get teamwork, and just a physical fitness approach to it, and a mental approach, it's just a great combination all along."
